BOX SCORE

The baseball team began their schedule on Wednesday night by defeating SUNY-Maritime, 9-6, in a non-conference road game in the Bronx.

The Bearcats were on the verge of defeat after trailing 6-5 with two outs in the ninth inning, but a fly ball hit by David Chestnut was dropped by Maritime to allow Jeffrey Merker to dramatically score the tying run at 6-6.

With Chestnut on second base, Maritime intentionally walked Thomas Daly for runners on first and second base with two outs. John Avona stepped up to the plate and slammed a three run homer to give the Bearcats the 9-6 lead to further stun the Privateers.

Noel Placencia earned the save with three quick outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Bearcats escape with the non-conference victory to start the regular season.

Baruch jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind home runs from Aldo Altamirano and Chestnut.

Maritime rallied to tie the contest at 4-4 in the fifth inning, and eventually took the 6-5 lead in their bottom half of the eighth inning before the Bearcats rallied to defeat the home team.

Chestnut (2 RBI), Altamirano (1 Run, 1 RBI) and Richard Melendez (two stolen bases) recorded two hits each in the win, while Jason Berliner earned the pitching victory.
