Folashade Akinde narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Baruch College Bearcats to a 77-67 home victory over Richard Stockton College Ospreys in a non-conference contest played on Monday night in the ARC Arena.
The visiting Ospreys (12-6) from the New Jersey Athletic Conference led 40-35 with 57 seconds left in the first half, but a free throw by Akinde and a three-point play by Iyana Abrams quickly cut the advantage to one point (40-39) before the halftime whistle.
The Bearcats (9-8) fed off the positive finish to the first half and began the second with a 20-5 run to take a lead of 59-45 with 13:11 left in the game. The lead would later grow to as much as 16 points (65-49) on a jumper by Abrams.
The Ospreys slowly battled back down the final stretch, but could only get as close as seven points (73-66) as the Bearcats consistently responded with key baskets to record the home victory.
Both teams shot 40 percent in the contest, but the Bearcats were able to win the rebounding battle with a 47-36 advantage. The Bearcats also outscored their opponents, 35-19, in bench scoring.
Kelsey Brown led the Ospreys with 17 points (7-11 fg) and six rebounds. Che’Na Thompson scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.
The Bearcats had four players in double-figure scoring led by Akinde with 15 points, while Vikki DeTata and Jessica Duleba finished with 13 points each. Abrams rounded out the high scoring with 11 points and three steals.
The women’s basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, January 25, with a 5:30 pm CUNYAC home contest against the Cougars of Medgar Evers College.
