The women’s basketball team suffered a 69-54 defeat to the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament played on Friday night in Providence, Rhode Island.

The Anchorwomen took control of the action by ending the first half with a 21-6 run to turn a 20-18 contest with eight minutes left into a 41-24 halftime advantage.

The Bearcats dug themselves into a hole by shooting only 28.6 percent (10-35) in that first half, while the Anchorwomen shot 42.1 percent (16-38), including 5-of-12 from three-point range.

In the second half, the Anchorwomen connected early on 3-of-4 three point attempts and managed to lead comfortably the rest of the game to improve their record to an undefeated 14-0 at home this season.

The Anchorwomen advance to tomorrow night’s second round at 7:00 pm to play Emmanuel College. Emmanuel defeated Hartwick College, 68-61, in the first game of tonight’s NCAA doubleheader.

Jessica Duleba scored 10 points in the contest, while Francess Henry had 10 points and two steals.

Folashade Akinde (11 pts, 13 rbs), Shamika Boyce (6 pts, 5 rbs) and Alyscia Jordan all saw their solid playing careers come to an end this evening in the NCAA Tournament.

The Bearcats finish the season with a 19-10 overall record. They have won at least 18 games during each of the past eight seasons.
