Florin Giuglescu has established a formidable reputation over the past 30 years as one of the leading tennis teachers in the New York City metropolitan area.
As head coach of both the Baruch men's and women's tennis teams, he has compiled a record of success rivaled only by the star power of his client list.
He has been named the 2004 and 2008 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Tennis Coach of the Year for leading his young student-athletes to championship seasons.
His men's team have won the CUNYAC Championships in 2000, 2002, and during the past five seasons (2004-'08) in dominant fashion.
In addition, with the men winning the 2007 championship, they earned CUNY's first-ever berth to the NCAA Tournament.They made the most of their first NCAA appearance by defeating Alvernia, 5-4, in a first round thriller played on the campus of Swarthmore College.
The women's program have finished second during each of the past three seasons (2005-07) in the CUNYAC Tournament, and won the CUNYAC Tournament Championship in 1997.
The success of the program has not only been on the court, but in the classroom as well, as a large number of his student-athletes have been named CUNYAC Scholar-Athletes.
The 2006 women's tennis team also featured a cumulative GPA of 3.44, and # 1 singles player Kateryna Pylypyshyna (3.98 GPA) was twice named to the ESPN The Magazine District I - College Division All-Academic Second Team.
Giuglescu first came to Baruch in 1978, taking the reins of the men's tennis program until 1987. He returned in fall of 1996 to coach both the women's and men's teams.
The accomplishments of the 2002 men's team earned them a full-page article in the New York Daily News.
A Life Member of the United States Professional Tennis Registry and a Master Pro with the United States Professional Tennis Association, Giuglescu has taught both top-notch pros and absolute beginners with equal enthusiasm and effectiveness.
His professional pupils have included the likes of Barbara Potter, Silvia Hanika, Tim Mayotte, and Yannick Noah. His list of amateur students, however, is still more impressive: Mike Lupica, Peter Jennings, Bill Cosby, Dustin Hoffman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, and President George H. W. Bush have all taken past lessons from the Bearcat mentor.
A native of Bolgrad, Romania, Giuglescu immigrated to the United States in 1973 and became an American citizen in 1979.
He is the holder of Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Physical Education from the University of Bucharest, and has also studied at NYU and Columbia University.
As a player, he was ranked between 28th and 36th in the United States and #3 in the East in the USTA Over-40 Division between during 1983-1993.
Giuglescu speaks four languages fluently and can read in three others.
