BOX SCORE

The women’s basketball team stayed undefeated in the CUNYAC standings by defeating the Lightning of Lehman, 80-69, in a CUNYAC contest on Wednesday night at The Apex Athletic Center on the campus of Lehman College in the Bronx.

The visiting Bearcats (11-3, 4-0 CUNYAC) controlled the action early and led 29-16 with 4:57 left in the first half. However, the Lightning (8-6, 2-2 CUNYAC) rallied in the final four minutes of the half with a 16-4 run to trail by one point (33-32) at halftime.

Lehman took the lead quickly at the start of the second half on a layup by Jaleesa Gordon for a 34-33 advantage in front of their excited home crowd, but the Bearcats quickly responded by scoring the next seven points to take back the lead at 40-34 with 15:53 left in the game.

Lehman tried to rally and was able on four different occasions to cut the deficit to three points, but Baruch ended the contest by scoring 13 of the last 20 points to record the high-scoring 80-69 victory.

Neither team shot the ball well this evening (Baruch 29-79, Lehman 26-70), but the Bearcats won the second chance points battle (19-4) and also received 19 points from their bench compared to only four by Lehman. The Bearcats also won the important rebounding stat with a 57-44 advantage.

Folashade Akinde led the Bearcats with a double-double of 19 points (7-11 fg) and 14 rebounds, while Megan Bouwens (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Jessica Duleba (12 points, 10 rebounds) also recorded a double-double each as part of a balanced attack this evening.

Monique Salmon scored 12 points and dished out 11 assists in 34 solid minutes of action.

Amanda De La Cruz led the home team with 26 points, including 16 in the second half. Louvinia Hayes recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Baruch and Lehman will battle again on Monday, January 24, with a 2:30 pm contest at the Prudential Center (Nicknamed “The Rock”) in Newark, New Jersey. The Rock plays host this season to New Jersey Nets NBA basketball games and Baruch-Lehman will play on their official NBA court, which is also home to Seton Hall University Big East basketball games.

Confirmed ticket details will be available and posted in the next 48 hours. A ticket to the game will also include the NBA contest later that evening between the NJ Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Baruch women will return to action on Friday, January 14, with a 5:30 CUNYAC home contest in the ARC Arena against the Dolphins from the College of Staten Island.
