Softball Drops Tough Doubleheader to Rutgers-Newark

The softball team lost a non-conference doubleheader (8-0, 12-6) to the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers University-Newark on Thursday afternoon at Randall's Island.

In the opener, the Bearcats were limited to five hits, while the visiting Scarlet Raiders scored in every inning, except the first, for the 8-0 shutout.

In the second game, it was a different story. The Bearcats scored first and jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the second inning.

They stayed ahead 5-4 into the sixth inning, but the Scarlet Raiders broke open the contest by batting around with seven runs to lead, 11-5.

The Bearcats added a run in their bottom half of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Cassandra Lagana, but it was not enough to suffer the 12-6 victory.

Nicole Bellini had a solid game two batting 3-for-4, with an RBI and run scored. Juliann Gross was solid on the mound and added a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI at the plate. Salena Robles scored two runs.

The Bearcats will resume their conference schedule on Saturday, April 23, with a 12 p.m. CUNYAC home doubleheader at Randall's Island (#12) on Senior Day against Lehman College.
