FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Medical Requirements

How do I get a physical?
You may receive a physical from your own personal physician or any Medical Doctor (MD, DO). All physicals must be within 6 months of your first practice at Baruch, and must be signed and stamped by the physician. Student Health Services offers free physicals to all enrolled Baruch College students. You must schedule an appointment in order to receive a physical; walk-ins will not be accepted

Do I need to use a specific form for my physical?
Yes. The Physical/Sickle Cell form can be found on SportsWare under the "Forms" section. It should be printed out and brought with you to your appointment so the physician can complete it. Once completed, a copy must be uploaded into your SportsWare account.

Do I need to get tested for Sickle Cell Trait?
Yes- Sickle Cell Trait testing is an NCAA requirement for participation. All Baruch College student-athletes are required to provide documentation of their sickle cell status, including corresponding lab results or birth records. Information on how to meet this requirement can be found within the Physical/Sickle Cell form located within SportsWare. Once completed, all documentation must be uploaded in your SportsWare account.

Insurance

Do I need health insurance?
No, you are not required to have personal health insurance to be eligible to become a Baruch College student-athlete. However, it is strongly recommended to have accident insurance that covers intercollegiate athletic injuries in order to keep out of pocket medical costs low.

Where can I get health insurance?
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a new federal law that requires all individuals to have health insurance by January 1, 2014. Visit the Baruch College Health Services Health Insurance page to find information on free or low cost Health Plan options for students. You can also visit the New York State Health Insurance Marketplace website.

What insurance does Baruch College Athletics provide?
All eligible Baruch College student-athletes who participate on a varsity intercollegiate team are covered under a Sports Accident Insurance Policy issued to the college. This is a Secondary Insurance plan for athletic related injuries that occur during supervised practices and games. Pre-existing conditions, illness or sickness not directly related to an athletic injury, or injuries outside of supervised and official practices/competition are not covered.

What does it cost me?
You are responsible for premiums and deductibles of your primary insurance and Baruch College’s Insurance will be implemented as a secondary for excess cost. If the school's insurance is implemented and you do not have primary health insurance, you will be responsible for a $500.00 deductible per injury.
