Baseball won their conference opener against Lehman.

Bearcats Take Out Lehman (15-2); Losing Streak Stopped at Four

The baseball team ended a four-game losing streak with a 15-2 rout of Lehman College in a conference game played on Thursday afternoon in the Bronx.

Lehman (3-5, 2-1 CUNYAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage, but the Bearcats (3-4, 1-0 CUNYAC) took control the rest of the way to take the opener of the three-game series. The game was called after seven innings, due to darkness.

Senior Arby Gega (Jamaica, N.Y./Hillcrest) started the offense in the second inning with a double and came home to score on an RBI single by senior Thomas Russo (Howard Beach, N.Y./St. Francis Prep). The lead that inning immediately grew as sophomore Max Loehrke (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) belted a two-run homer to right-center for a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Joseph Valentin (Co-Op City, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) batted 2-for-4, with four RBI and two runs scored, while senior Ray Mowatt (Bronx, N.Y./LaGuardia) scored three runs and stole three bases. Mowatt also throw a player out at home plate in the fifth inning.

Russo finished batting 2-for-3, with two runs scored and two RBI.

Senior Alberto Nieves (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) pitched a seven-inning complete game, with four hits allowed, six strikeouts and only one earned run.

The Bearcats totaled 11 hits in scoring 15 runs, which is their biggest output of the young season.

The team will continue their conference series against Lehman this upcoming Saturday with a home doubleheader at City Line Park in Brooklyn. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
