The Bearcats will try to bounce back on Sunday, which is now a very important home game for the conference standings.

Staten Island Sweep Doubleheader (6-1, 10-1)

4/1/2006 4:51:52 PM

The baseball team had a rough day, dropping a doubleheader to CSI on Saturday afternoon at the CSI baseball complex.

The Dolphins (9-6, 6-0 CUNYAC) won the opener, 6-1, behind the hitting of Matt Stefanski (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) and Paul Buonviaggio (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond). They each batted 2-for-3, as part of a nine-hit attack by the Dolphins.

Baruch scored their lone run with two outs in the fourth inning. Senior Alberto Nieves (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) singled, freshman Joseph Valentin (Co-Op City, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) walked, and senior Arby Gega (Jamaica, N.Y./Hillcrest) singled home Nieves for the lone score.

Nieves also pitched a complete-game with two strikeouts and one walk, but CSI pitcher Jon Reyes (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) won the game, as he allowed only four hits and notched 10 strikeouts.

The first game saw a one-hour rain delay, due to a passing thundershower.

In the second game, the CSI offense came alive again for a 10-1 victory and sweep.

Anthony Piccirillo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) led the home team, batting 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Stefanski recorded two hits and two runs scored.

Sophomore Montana Leonard (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) drove in the only run in the fourth inning with a single to score junior Charles Dantone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian). Baruch had two total hits in game two.

Baseball will return to action on Sunday with a single conference home game against CSI. First pitch at the CSI baseball complex is scheduled for Noon. (Baruch is the home team, but the game is being played at CSI)
