CSI Shut Down Bearcats (17-5) to Sweep Conference Series

4/2/2006 7:44:14 PM

The College of Staten Island won the final game of the three-game series against the Bearcats, 17-5, on a windy Sunday afternoon at the CSI baseball complex.

The victory improves the Dolphins of Staten Island to 9-7 overall and a perfect 7-0 in CUNYAC, while the Bearcats drop to 6-9 overall and an even 3-3 in CUNYAC.

The story of the entire three-game series was pitching, and it continued today with CSI starter Stephen Mojica (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) posting the win by going six innings, with three strikeouts, two walks, and only one earned run. He left the game with CSI winning, 13-2.

The game started on a positive note for the Bearcats with Arby Gega (Jamaica, N.Y./Hillcrest) hitting a sacrifice fly in the opening inning to score Ray Mowatt (Bronx, N.Y./LaGuardia) for a quick 1-0 lead.

However, the lead was short lived, as CSI scored three in the third, two in the fourth, and four each in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

Junior Bob Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and Anthony Piccirillo (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) each recorded three hits, while junior Mike Liconti (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) and Joel Pratts (Brooklyn, N.Y.James Madison) scored three times each to lead the 16-hit offensive attack.

Mowatt led the Bearcats at the plate, batting 2-for-5 with two singles, two runs, and three stolen bases. Junior Charles Dantone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) had an RBI triple, while sophomore Max Loehrke (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) hit a single to score two runs in the 8th inning. Sophomore Cesar Chaves (Booklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) rounded out the Bearcats offense this afternoon with an RBI single.

Baruch wil continue a busy week of baseball with a home non-conference game on Tuesday night versus Polytechnic. First pitch at Roberto Clemente State Park is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
