The baseball team swept Yeshiva in a conference doubleheader (21-4, 13-5) on Sunday afternoon at William Taft High School in the Bronx.
The victory improves the Bearcats to 13-17 and 9-8 in CUNYAC, while Yeshiva drop to 0-15 overall and in conference play.
The doubleheader was preceded by a Senior Day Ceremony that honored Tristan Cetto (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham), Thomas Russo (Howard Beach, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), Charles Dantone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian), Ray Mowatt (Bronx, N.Y./LaGuardia), Mike Etkin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison), Arby Gega (Jamaica, N.Y./Hillcrest), and Alberto Nieves (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum).
In the first game, junior Ramon Grullon (Brooklyn, N..Y./Murry Bergtraum) pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts and three walks.
Freshman Joseph Valentin (Co-Op City, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) batted 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, seven RBI, and four runs scored in a dominating performance at the plate. Nieves batted 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple, and four runs scored.
Baruch broke the game open with eight runs in the sixth inning.
In the second game, freshman Ted Zhou (Flushing, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) pitched into the seventh inning, for his fourth win, by striking out five and walking four. Junior Dennis Treulieb (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) provided a strong relief performance in the seventh inning by getting all three outs in a tough bases-loaded situation.
Sophomore Cesar Chaves (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) batted 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored.
Sophomore Max Loehrke (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) had two RBI, while Dantone recorded a game-changing, two-run single in the sixth inning.
Gega, who was hit five times total in the doubleheader, batted 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases.
Valentin reached base nine consecutive times in the doubleheader, finishing 9-for-9 with four doubles, a homer, eight RBI, and four walks (three intentional).
The Bearcats will return to action on Monday with an important conference road game against CCNY. First pitch at American Legion Field in Brooklyn is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
The winner of this game will clinch the third seed in the CUNYAC Baseball Tournament on May 6-7 at CSI.
