The # 13 William Paterson University Pioneers defeated the Bearcats, 70-51, in a non-conference men’s basketball game played on Monday night at the W.P.U. Rec Center in Wayne, New Jersey.
The game began evenly with the score tied at 11 apiece with 9:48 left in the opening half, but the Pioneers (11-5) scored 12 consecutive points to break away for a 23-11 advantage with five minutes left. All-American Luis Martinez (Passaic, N.J./Clifton) scored five points during that span with a dunk and three-pointer.
The double-digit lead would hold as the hosts led at halftime, 32-20.
During the second half, the Pioneers started with a 10-2 run and built a 56-31 lead with 9:23 left. Joey Spiegel (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) scored six of his 11 points and dished out two assists to help run up the big advantage.
William Paterson finished the second half shooting 60 percent (15-25) from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc to win, 70-51.
The Bearcats (6-10) received balanced scoring with junior Adrian Serrano (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) and freshman Jeffrey Leider (Las Vegas, Nev./Cheyenne) each scoring nine points, while freshman Arki Wisnu (New York, N.Y./Newtown) and junior Phil Schatz (Middle Village, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) scored eight points.
Martinez scored his 1,000th career point in the victory to become the 25th player to reach the milestone with the Pioneers. He led all scorers this evening with 17 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
The Bearcats will return to action this Wednesday with a conference home game against the College of Staten Island. Tip-off in the ARC Arena is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
