CUNYAC Weekly Report, Week 8: Men's and Women's Swimming
The men's and women's swimming teams both concluded their 2006-07 regular season schedule with home victories against Lehman College on Thursday night in the ARC Aquatic Center.
The women finish the season with an 8-7 record overall and 4-1 mark in CUNYAC, while the men improve to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in CUNYAC.
Both teams finish in second place in the conference standings and also recorded the most wins in the five-year history of the ARC Aquatic Center.
The men's meet was the most exciting with the Bearcats defeating Lehman in the final event (200 free relay) to capture the 104-98 victory. Sophomore Camilo Reyes (Bogota, Colombia/Woodlands), junior Carlos Nieto (Queens, N.Y./St. Anthony's), junior Michael Wursthorn (Middle Village, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), and junior Igor Gorodetskiy (Staten Island, N.Y./Petrides) won the meet-clinching relay.
The relay team of junior Tony Zhang (College Point, N.Y./Bronx Science), freshman Justin Wong (Brooklyn, N.Y./Stuyvesant), freshman R. Michael Shiwnath (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), and sophomore Brian Ramirez (Diamond Bar, Calif./Walnut) were victorious in the opening 200 medley relay.
Zhang recorded a solid evening by also winning the 200 I.M. and 100 back, while Shiwnath was second in the 100 free and broke his own school record in the 200 free while placing second.
Sophomore Jonathan Bermudez (Rego Park, N.Y./W. C. Bryant) broke his own school record in the 800 free while placing second.
The women's team recorded a big victory against Lehman with a 117-53 scoreline.
The Bearcats broke the school record in the opening 200 medley relay with senior Daniela Sepulveda (Middletown, N.Y./Goshen Central), junior Annelie Gregor (Stockholm, Sweden/Huddinge), freshman Jessica Penaherrera (Guayaquil, Ecuador/U.E.M.S.), and junior Laura Tumulak (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame).
Gregor also set a second school record in winning the 200 free, while Sepulveda won the 50 free and Tumulak won the 400 free. Penaherra finished second in the 200 free.
The Bearcats had several first place winners in other events with junior Angela Miranda (Lima, Peru/White Plains) winning the 800 free, junior Cassandra Mendola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) the 100 free, freshman Grace Kim (Queens, N.Y./Francis Lewis) the 100 back, and junior Amber Fleming (New York, N.Y./B.M.C.C.) the 200 I.M.
The Bearcats will now prepare for the 2007 CUNYAC Finals on February 2-3, that will be hosted by Lehman College in the Bronx.
