The baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a pair of road victories against Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon at Taft High School in the Bronx.
The Bearcats will finish their three-game conference series against CUNYAC associate baseball member Yeshiva with a 7:00 pm single home game on Monday night at Taft High School.
Junior Greg Polius (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Mary’s) pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to help clinch the 17-0 victory. At the plate, he also contributed a home run, two walks, two RBI, and a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore Joseph Valentin (Co-op City, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) had another solid game with three singles and two RBI, while freshman Josh Jairam (Jamaica, N.Y./Forest Hills) hit a double, single, and one RBI.
Junior Montana Leonard (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) rounded out the team’s best offensive game of 2007 with a double, single, and two RBI.
Baruch scored three runs in the first inning, five in the third inning, and three more in the fourth inning to quickly go up, 11-0, after four innings on a warm and comfortable day in the Bronx.
The shutout victory is their first in five years.
In the nightcap, Yeshiva jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the opening inning.
Baruch responded with three runs in the second inning and four more in the third inning to take over the lead, 9-7.
They would never relinquish that lead, thanks to the solid pitching of senior Dennis Treulieb (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow).
He entered the game in relief with Baruch trailing 7-2 and kept Yeshiva from any significant offense to help give the Bearcats the eventual 14-11 victory.
Treulieb struck of four in one of longest relief efforts (6.1 innings) in school history to capture game two.
Polius came up big again in the victory with three walks, two singles, and four stolen bases, while junior Ramon Grullon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) recorded four hits in the first four innings to seal the comeback victory.
Grullon finished four-for-four with three singles, a double, a sacrifice fly, and one RBI. He was also lethal on the base pads with four stolen bases.
