BOX SCORE
The men’s soccer team recorded the finest win of their season with a memorable 1-0 double overtime victory at Manhattanville College on Sunday afternoon in Purchase, New York.
Despite being out-shot (39-9) most of the afternoon, the Bearcats made it count the most when it matters by scoring the sudden death goal with 12 seconds left in what was likely the last play of the non-conference match.
Senior defender Vincent Favara (Ridgewood, NY/Archbishop Molloy) scored the game-winner by leaping high over the defense to head home the goal on a corner kick assist from two-time CUNYAC All-Star Caner Yilmaz (Queens, NY/Istanbul-Turkey).
“Today’s win was a quality victory against a very strong and well coached program from the Middle Atlantic Freedom Conference,” said fourth-year Head Coach Ranford Champagnie. “Our players played really hard today and scored when it counted the most. We will all appreciate the victory, but tomorrow, we need to focus and get ready to play Hunter College on Saturday night.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Nelson DiBastiano (Rego Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) finished the exciting victory with 14 total saves. DiBastiano, who is currently listed among the best 15 goalkeepers statistically in NCAA Division III, has now recorded 10 or more saves in four matches this season.
The defense in front of DiBastiano also stepped up with Vincent Favara and Nikolay Shnayderman (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) each making goal-line saves to keep the Valiants off the scoreboard on a warm Sunday afternoon.
Vincent Favara and rookie striker Freddy Carasco-Dance (East Elmhurst, NY/William C. Bryant) led the Bearcats with two shots each this afternoon.
Baruch will enjoy a brief break in the schedule this week and will return to action next Saturday, September 29th, with a 6:00 pm CUNYAC road match at the Met Oval against Lexington Avenue rival Hunter College.
Manhattanville, who earlier this season played the #10th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology to a 1-1 draw, will also return to action next Saturday with a 7:00 pm home match against Skidmore College.
