CUNYAC Weekly Women's Volleyball Report - 9/24/07

The women's volleyball team won for the third time in their last four matches with a 3-0 sweep of Staten Island on Tuesday evening in the ARC Arena.

The Bearcats cruised to victory in the opening two sets (30-17, 30-23), but fell behind 14-12 in the third. After a quick timeout, the team regrouped and went on a 13-3 run to pull ahead for the 25-17 advantage. They eventually captured the final set with a convincing 30-19 victory.

Sophomore Mayra Estepan (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and freshman Martina Micko (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) each notched 10 kills. Estepan also added five service aces and two block solos.

Freshman setter Kristin Walker (Fayetteville, Arkansas/Fayetteville) recorded 28 assists and four service aces, while Star Soanes (Dominica, West Indies/Norman Thomas) had seven kills and three service aces.

The Bearcats finished the victory with a team total of 21 service aces.

The women's volleyball team will continue their current homestand tomorrow night (Wednesday) with a 7:00 pm non-conference encounter against the United States Merchant Marine Academy (King's Point).
