Hawks Edge Bearcats (50-45)

The women’s swim team lost a hard fought meet to Hunter College, 50-45, on Friday night at Hunter’s Brookdale Campus on 23rd Street.

The Bearcats started the meet strong with first place finishes in the medley relay and 1000 Free, but the Hawks pulled away in the last few events to capture the victory and take possession of first place in the conference standings.

A list of highlights can be found below…


* Annelie Gregor (Huddinge, Sweden), Dorene Chin (Valley Stream, N.Y./Elmont Memorial), Jessica Penaherrera (Guayaquil, Ecuador/U.E.M.S.) and Dawn Wursthorn (Middle Village, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) were victorious in the medley relay.

* Gregor also captured first place in the 1000 Free, while Cassandra Mendola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) placed third. Gregor also won the 500 Free in dominating fashion.

* Penaherrera placed first and broke her own school record in the 100 Fly. She also placed second in the 200 Free. 

* Chin placed second in the 50 Free and 100 Breast events.

* Wursthorn placed second in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Fly events.

* Laura Tumulak (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame) placed second in the 100 Free.

* Grace Kim (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) was second in the 100 Back.

The women’s swimming team will regroup and return to action on Thursday, January 17, with a 6:00 pm home conference meet against the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
