Women Cruise to Win, Men Narrowly Defeated in Final Event; Saragosti, Arana Win CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Honors

Women: Baruch 118, SUNY-Maritime 81
Men: SUNY-Maritime 109, Baruch 96

The Bearcats competed against the Privateers from the State University of New York at Maritime in a non-conference road encounter on Wednesday night in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx.

The women had another strong meet by winning all but two events, while the men went the distance in losing via a very tight score.

In other special team news, the CUNY Athletic Conference office based out of Queens College today announced that Baruch's Idan Saragosti and Priscilla Arana have each been named the Rookie of the Week in the first set of weekly honors anounced for the 2008-09 season.

CUNYAC RELEASE - Women - Men

The two young stars, which are part of a very strong recruiting class, have started the season with solid record-setting performances against a series of very strong opponents from across the Division I (Manhattan College), II (Adelphi, Bridgeport) and III levels (SUNY-Maritime, Staten Island, William Paterson, St. Joseph's of Long Island).

Women's Highlights

** Grace Kim, Priscilla Arana, Jessica Penaherrera and Tiffany Wong started the meet by winning the 200 medley relay.

** Arana was also victorious individually by winning the 200 free and setting another freshmen record with a first place finish in the 100 breast. Penaherrera also earned first place individually by winning the 200 individual medley and 500 free events.

** Katherine Hansen finished second in the arduous 500 and 1,000 free events.

** Tiffany Wong (100 butterfly), Grace Kim (100 back), Irina Statina (1,000 free) and Keiko Akashi (50 free) were all victorious.

** The relay team of Olga Gaitskhoki, Catherine Urena, Atusa Mozaffari and Irina Statina ended the evening with a solid second place finish in the 200 free relay.

Men's Highlights

**
The evening began for the Bearcats with first place in the 200 medley relay behind the team of R. Michael Shiwnath, Jeffrey Wong, Idan Saragosti, and Justin Wong.

** Idan Saragosti also won and broke school and freshmen records in the 100 and 200 free events.

** R. Michael Shiwnath took second in the 50 free and first in the 100 back.

** Jeffrey Wong was victorious in the 200 individual medley (set freshman record) and 100 breast events.

** Jonathan Bermudez finished third and Benjamin Chu fourth in the arduous 1,000 free

** The evening ended with Camilo Reyes, Justin Wong, Benjamin Chu and Gustavo San Martin Dancourt finishing second in the 200 free relay.

The men's and women's swimming teams will resume action on Monday, November 24, with a 6:00 pm conference road meet at York College. The first event will start at 6:00 pm.
