Lehman 7, Baseball 6 BOX SCORE

The Bearcats lost both ends of a home doubleheader to Lehman College on Saturday afternoon in a conference encounter played at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn.

In the opener, the visiting Lightning did the damage early in the first inning with nine runs on seven total hits and two errors.

The Bearcats regained their composure and outscored Lehman, 7-6, the rest of the first game, but the big opening inning was too difficult to overcome.

Baruch scored four runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Paul Masone (Shirley, N.Y./Our Saviour), a sacrifice fly by David Chestnut (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth), and a two-run triple by Greg Polius (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Mary's).

They added a fifth run in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Masone, and two more in the seventh inning on RBI's by Benjamin Riofrio (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hills) and Polius.

In the nightcap, Lehman jumped out again early with a 5-0 lead, but Baruch battled back this time to tie the game in exciting fashion in the third inning with five runs on four hits and one Lehman error.

Polius began the rally with a single for two RBI, and Joseph Valentin (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) tied the game (5-5) with his own RBI single to score Chestnut.

Lehman took a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning, but Baruch tied the game again in their bottom half of the sixth inning on quick thinking by pinch runner Ariel Fernandez (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).

John Avona (Staten Island, N.Y./Farrell) stole second base, and with Lehman attempting to throw him out, Fernandez raced home from third base untouched to tie the game.

Lehman would score their winning run in the seventh inning, and a Baruch rally in their final at bat with two runners on base fell short to give the Lightning the 7-6 victory.

Baruch and Lehman will conclude their weekend series on Sunday afternoon with a single game scheduled for Noon on the campus of Lehman College
