Baseball Defeat C.S.I. in Game One (11-7); C.S.I. Win Game Two (14-8) in Exciting High-Scoring Afternoon in Staten Island

The Baruch Bearcats and the College of Staten Island split a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the CSI Baseball Complex.

In the opener, the visiting Bearcats played spoiler on Staten Island's Senior Day by recording an 11-7 victory via the efforts on the mound and plate by Greg Polius (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Mary's).

Baruch led from the first to final pitch by scoring a pair of runs in each of the first, third and fifth innings, and then clinched the victory with four runs in the sixth inning.

Polius recorded the complete game pitching victory and batted 4-for-5, with five RBI and two runs scored, including a two-run homer in the third inning.

Freshman John Avona (Staten Island, N.Y./Farrell) batted 2-for-4, with an insurance RBI single in the seventh inning to score Ronnie Rojas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth). Ramon Grullon  (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) scored three total runs in the game.

In the nightcap, the Bearcats took a 5-0 lead, then trailed 9-5, and kept it interesting in the top of the fourth inning with three more runs to trail only 9-8.

Unfortunately, the Dolphins would score the final five runs of the game to help salvage a doubleheader split.

Grullon was the key figure at the plate again for the Bearcats by batting 2-for-3, with three runs scored, for a total of six runs in the doubleheader.

Patrick Westrick (Staten Island, N.Y./S.I. Tech) also had a hot bat by going 2-for-4, with a run scored in the nightcap.

The Bearcats will finish the weekend conference series against Staten Island on Sunday by hosting a single game at Westchester Community College. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
