The softball team lost a home conference doubleheader to Hunter College on Saturday afternoon at the College of Staten Island softball complex.

In the opening game, the Bearcats took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a fielding error that scored Melinda Dolan (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa) and an RBI single by Melissa Pena (Queens, N.Y./W.C. Bryant) to score Sonia Sendoya (Queens, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum).

Hunter quickly scored twice in their top half of the third inning to tie the game, but Baruch went ahead again by a run on an RBI single by Cynthia Duran (New York, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) to score pinch runner Cristina Cespedes (New York, N.Y./Art & Design).

Baruch led 3-2 entering the sixth inning, but the visiting Hawk exploded with five runs on five hits and one error to take the lead and stay ahead for good, 7-3.

In the second game, Hunter did all the damage in their first at bat by scoring six runs on five hits and two costly errors to lead 6-0. Nicole Grilli (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) and Vitoria Capece (Floral Park, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) each had a single to score two runs.

Baruch attempted to cut the deficit and was only able to score a pair of runs in the fifth inning to suffer the 6-2 loss.

Melissa Pena hit a sacrifice fly to score Chrystal Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Mt. St. Ursala) for the first run, and Sendoya hit the fence in left field with a double to score Duran for the final Baruch run of the afternoon.

The softball team will return to action on Thursday with a 3:30 pm conference road doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark.
