Women's Volleyball Defeats Polytechnic in Five

The women’s volleyball team started strong but had to hold off a late rally by the Fighting Blue Jays from the Polytechnic Institute of NYU to record an exciting five-set victory on Thursday night in Brooklyn.

The visiting Bearcats started with 26-24 and 25-23 wins, but the home team went on a furious rally to tie the annual match by winning 25-10 and 25-22 to force the exciting fifth set tie-breaker on their home court.

The Bearcats (14-4) regrouped and won the fifth set, 15-12, to walk away with their 10th victory in their last 11 matches.

Prior to tonight, Polytechnic (17-6) from the Skyline Conference was a perfect 8-0 against CUNYAC teams this season. 

Christina Pierre led the Baruch attack again with 14 kills, while Lauren Hayden had 10 kills. Both players also notched five blocks each.

Melinda Santiago dished out 35 assists and Posey Wilson had another significant match defensively with 29 digs.

The women’s volleyball team will return to action on Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, when they will compete in the second CUNYAC Multi-Match event of the season that will be hosted by Hunter College.

The Bearcats will play Lehman College (9:00 am) and City Tech (11:00 am) in the morning matches of the day.
