Box Score Updated

The baseball team defeated the Blue Knights from Mount Saint Mary College, 10-3, in a non-conference home game on Thursday at the baseball field on the campus of Bronx Community College.

The victory improves the baseball team’s overall record to 8-5, while the visiting Blue Knights from the Skyline Conference suffer just their third loss to drop to 15-3.

Sophomore Kellin Bliss earned the victory by pitching seven innings with eight strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Bliss started slowly but got stronger as the game progressed to also earn his third win of the season.

The Blue Knights threatened in the seventh inning with runners on first and second via back-to-back walks, but Bliss fought back by striking out the next three batters to end the inning and rally in front of the excited team bench.

The Baruch offense, which has scored at least five runs in 10 of 13 games this season, came through again this afternoon in the Bronx.

The game was high scoring early and tied (3-3) going into the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Manuel Guerrero broke the tie with an RBI ground out to score freshman Aldo Altamirano for a 4-3 lead and eventual winning play.

The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior David Chestnut scored junior Arturo Ledesma with an RBI single and senior captain Joseph Valentin added the sixth run with an RBI single to score Daly for the 6-3 lead.

The Bearcats blew the game wide open with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ledesma hit a long RBI triple to score senior Jorge Rosado, and Ledesma came around to score when Daly nailed a double down the left field line for the 9-3 lead.

Sophomore Daniel Kehoe put the game out of reach for the visitors from Newburgh, New York with an RBI single to score the busy Daly for the final 10-3 score line.

Joseph Valentin finished batting 3-for-5, and also pitched two solid innings of relief, including helping turn an impressive 1-6-3 double play to wipe out a Blue Knights rally in the eight inning.

In all, the Bearcats totaled 10 runs on 13 hits to already double their win total from last season (four total wins in 2008, eight and counting this year with over 20 games remaining).

Ledesma finished batting 3-for-5, with two RBI and three runs scored, while Jorge Rosado continued his solid fielding leadership at shortstop and contributed two hits, including a double.
