The women's tennis team lost a hard fought match (5-4) to rival Hunter College in a CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) showdown Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The Bearcats started by winning two of the first three doubles for a 2-1 lead, but the Hawks fought back to win four of the six singles to clinch the 5-4 victory.

Mariam Mkrtchyan had a solid afternoon for the Bearcats by teaming up with Shalanda Graham to record a 9-7 victory in #2 doubles. Mariam followed that up at #4 singles by defeating Hunter's Stefanie Smith, 6-4, 6-2.

In other special team news today, the CUNY Athletic Conference named Monika Maiellano the CUNYAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week. Monika went a perfect 6-0 (doubles & singles) in matches against Staten Island, John Jay and Rutgers-Newark.

Alina Bero was named the CUNYAC Rookie of Week for the first time. The rookie recorded solid single victories in each of her encounters last week against Staten Island, John Jay and Rutgers-Newark.

Overall, in addition to her #6 singles victory today against Hunter's Ericka Jaramillo, Alina is a solid 4-1 this season in singles competition.

The women's tennis team will return to action on Friday with a 3:00 pm road match against the City College of New York. Please note CCNY will host this match at the Roosevelt Island tennis courts.
