John Jay Rallies in Final Inning to Defeat Bearcats 9-8 in CUNYAC Season Opener

The Bloodhounds from John Jay College of Criminal Justice scored six runs in their final at-bat of the ninth inning to record a 9-8 comeback victory against the Bearcats on Saturday afternoon at the American Legion Complex in Brooklyn.

The two teams will finish their weekend series tomorrow, Sunday, March 28, with the Bearcats hosting a Noon time CUNYAC doubleheader at the Bronx Community College baseball field.

The home team John Jay took an early 2-0 lead, but the Bearcats scored four runs in the top half of the sixth inning to go ahead, 4-2.

Richard Melendez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run, followed David Chestnut smacking a single for two RBI to take the 3-2 lead. Thomas Daly then stepped up to the plate with an RBI single for the 4-2 score.

The Bearcats kept their momentum on their side and scored once in the 8th inning and three more in the 9th inning for the 8-3 advantage heading into John Jay’s final at-bat. Daly (15 total RBI this season) had the big hit again in the three-run 9th inning with a double to right center to score two runs.

John Jay then orchestrated the dramatic comeback with four total hits to score six runs to pull off the 9-8 CUNYAC victory.

David Chestnut will suffer the no decision despite a solid performance on the mound with 7.2 innings pitched with three earned runs and two strikeouts. Chestnut also finished batting 2-for-5, with three total RBI in a solid all-around performance.

Peter Dinolfo, Manuel Guerrero and Melendez all scored two runs each in the game.
