The men’s & women’s swimming teams began their 2011-12 season on Thursday night, October 27, with a meet against Metropolitan Conference rival William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey.

The Bearcats suffered losses, but both dual meets were decided in the very last relay event (200 freestyle) in a competitive encounter between both schools.

The women were led by 2011 CUNYAC Women’s Performer of the Year Priscilla Arana. She won the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events, and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team along with teammates Julia Sung, Apolonia Cieslak and Alyssa Lubrino.

Sung also had a big evening by winning the 200 Individual Medley and 100 backstroke.

The other swimmer to win all three of her events was Lubrino, who won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, in addition to the 200 medley relay. Jennifer Chern won the one meter diving event with a personal best score of 133.275.

The Bearcats and William Paterson were neck-and-neck until the very last event when the hosts captured first place (11 points) in the 200 yard freestyle to pull out the very tight five point victory.

On the men’s side, Kenny Kim was victorious in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly events, while teaming up with Gabriel Yanez, Jeffrey Wong and Ryan Flynn to win the 200 medley relay.

Flynn also won the sprint events of the 50 & 100 freestyle, while Yanez won the 200 individual medley and was second in the 100 backstroke. Wong was third in the 200 individual medley and won the 100 breaststroke event.

George Martinez broke a school and freshman record in the arduous 1,000 freestyle event and was second in the 500 freestyle.

The men were leading up to the final event, but William Paterson won the 200 freestyle relay to capture the 11 points to overtake Baruch for the victory.

The men’s and women’s swimming teams will return to action on Halloween Day, Monday, October 31, with their home opener against the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.). The first event will begin at 6:00 pm.
