Baseball Splits DH Against John Jay, Scheduling Change for March 31

SCHEDULING NOTE: Due to scheduling regulations, the single CUNYAC contest against Yeshiva, which was postponed by cold weather on March 3, has been rescheduled to Thursday, March 31, at 7:30 pm, at Taft H.S. in the Bronx. Yeshiva is an associate member of CUNYAC in the sport of baseball only. The game against NYU Poly, which was originally scheduled for Thursday, March 31, has been postponed. No rescheduled date is available.

The baseball team split a doubleheader against John Jay College of Criminal Justice on a cold Sunday afternoon at Bronx Community College baseball field.

John Jay (2-12, 2-2 CUNYAC) won the opener, 8-6, but the visiting Bearcats (5-10, 2-1 CUNYAC) rebounded in the second game to win, 9-2.

In the first game, Steven Caracena blasted a first inning grand slam for a quick 4-0 John Jay lead.

The Bearcats responded with three runs in their top half of the second inning. One run scored on a fielding error and two more came in via a two RBI single by
John Yuksekol.

John Jay scored twice in the third inning for a 6-3 advantage, but the Bearcats added two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to tie the game at 6-all.

Alvin Mata doubled to right center to drive home the first run and Thomas Daly ripped an RBI single to account for the second run in the fourth inning. Marcos Mejia scored on a fielding error for the game-tying run in the fifth inning.

John Jay scored again twice in the sixth inning and held on for the 8-6 home victory.

Overall, John Jay scored eight runs on six hits and committed six fielding errors. Baruch scored six runs on seven hits and committed three errors.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Baruch bats came alive early as they scored five runs in the first two innings of play.

Thomas Daly, the CUNYAC Player of the Week, smacked a grand slam home run in the second inning to help build a 5-0 lead. Baruch broke open the game further in the fourth inning with three more runs, highlighted on a two-run homer to right center by
Jonathan Ovalles.

Jesus Izarra pitched the complete game victory with no earned runs, four hits allowed and four strikeouts.

Overall in the second game, the Bearcats scored nine runs on 11 hits and committed one error. John Jay scored two runs on four hits and committed one error.

The Bearcats will return to action on Tuesday, March 29, with a 3:30 pm non-conference contest at Rutgers-Newark. The game will be played at Newark Bears Stadium in Newark, New Jersey.
