The baseball team split their two games on Friday in the first day of the CUNYAC Double-Elimination Championship Tournament at MCU Park in Coney Island.

The Bearcats suffered a disappointing 6-3 loss in 12 innings to John Jay College of Criminal Justice, but bounced back in the loser’s bracket game by routing the Beavers of CCNY, 9-2.

The Beavers are the first team eliminated from the tournament with their second loss, while the Bearcats stay alive and next play on Saturday, April 30, at 1:00 pm, against the loser of the 10:00 am winner’s bracket game between CSI and John Jay.

All tournament playoff games are being played at MCU Park in Coney Island and there is no admission charge to watch any playoff game this weekend in the minor league stadium used by the New York Mets Single A affiliate the Brooklyn Cyclones.

In the first game, the Bearcats committed seven errors and allowed the Bloodhounds to jump out to a 3-0 lead with a run scored in each of the first three innings.

However, in the fifth inning,
Anthony Melendez smacked his fifth home run of the season to the right field bleachers to score Jonathan Ovalles to cut the score to 3-2.

They would go on to tie the game in the eighth inning on quick base running by
Thomas Daly. The junior from Valley Stream, New York doubled to left center and would reach third base on a passed ball. He would score two pitches later on a wild pitch to tie the contest (3-3).

The two teams would remain tied until the 12th inning when John Jay scored three runs on five hits and one error to lead 6-3. The Bearcats attempted a rally by loading the bases with two outs, but could not score any runs to suffer their first defeat of the double-elimination tournament.

Kellin Bliss pitched a solid game with 7.2 innings on the mound with only one run earned and four strikeouts, but gets the no decision. Alex Rodriguez earns the pitching victory (2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K) in relief for the Bloodhounds.

In the second game, the Bearcats cruised to a 9-2 victory behind a 16-hit attack and another strong performance on the mound from the ace of the pitching staff
Jesus Izarra (8 IP, 8H, 0 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) to earn his seventh win to keep the team alive for another day in the 29th Annual CUNYAC Baseball Tournament.

Six different players recorded at least two hits, while
Manuel Guerrero led the way with three singles at the plate. Daly finished with a team-high three RBI.
