Baruch 8, Staten Island 4

The Baruch Bearcats forced a game seven of the 2011 CUNYAC Double-Elimination Championship Tournament by defeating the College of Staten Island (CSI), 8-4, on Saturday afternoon at MCU Park in Coney Island.

For the second straight year, Baruch (16-18) and the CSI Dolphins (23-15) will meet in game seven to decide the championship. The Bearcats won the championship in 2009 and finished in second place in 2010.

The exciting game seven is scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, at 7:30 pm, at MCU Park in Coney Island. Admission is free and the Baruch community is encouraged to attend as the team seeks to win their third-ever CUNYAC tournament title in the wonderful minor league stadium of the New York Mets single A affiliate the Brooklyn Cyclones (
DIRECTIONS
).

The Bearcats started a busy Saturday by defeating John Jay, 6-1, to advance to play CSI. Since CSI was undefeated in the double elimination tournament, the Bearcats needed to defeat CSI to force a game seven.

The team totaled 14 hits and received a complete game pitching performance from
Jason Valentin (9 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) to defeat CSI.

CSI scored in their first at-bat, but the Bearcats erupted for four runs in the third inning.
Thomas Daly smacked an RBI single and later came around to score on a wild pitch. Anthony Melendez then hit a two RBI double to lift the Bearcats to a 4-1 lead.

They added two more runs in the fourth inning on another RBI single by Daly and an RBI single by
Alvin Mata for the 6-1 score.

Staten Island, which struggled on the field with seven errors, was able to score twice in the fifth inning and once in the seventh to cut the score to 6-4. The Bearcats responded again with two insurance runs in the eighth inning for an 8-4 score. Anthony Melendez and Daly again each hit an RBI single.

Valentin continued to get stronger as the game went along and shut down CSI quietly in the ninth inning to help the pitching staff record their second complete game of the day.
Jonathan Ovalles pitched a nine-inning gem in the earlier afternoon win against John Jay.

Baruch 6, John Jay 1

For the second straight year, Baruch College and the College of Staten Island (CSI) are the two teams left standing to play in the CUNYAC double-elimination championship tournament at MCU Park in Coney Island.

The Bearcats (15-18) defeated John Jay in Game Five, 6-1, to eliminate the Bloodhounds from the tournament with their second loss. CSI defeated John Jay in the morning winner’s bracket game by the score of 6-2 to hand the Bloodhounds their first loss.

CSI, which is undefeated this weekend, needs only one victory against the Bearcats to win the championship. The Bearcats must win today to force a seventh game to a “to be determined date/time” later this week.

John Jay (10-26) scored first in the third inning on a Steven Kendrick RBI single to bring home Yahnny Arias for a 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats quickly tied the game in their next at-bat on an RBI single by Thomas Daly to score Richard Melendez. They scored twice in the fourth inning as Pooti Ben Pradubsri scored from third base on a wild pitch and Anthony Melendez hit a sacrifice fly RBI to score Jonathan Ovalles for a 3-1 lead.

They would blow the game wide open in the seventh inning with three more runs. Daly and Alvin Mata each smacked back-to-back RBI triples, while Marcos Mejia hit a sacrifice fly for the three important insurance runs in the eighth inning.

Jonathan Ovalles pitched a complete game (9 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB) with nine strikeouts to lift Baruch to their second consecutive victory in the 29th Annual Tournament with the 6-1 final score.

Wilmer Chavez (7 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) suffered the season-ending loss for John Jay.  Arias led the team at the plate by batting 2-for-5, with a run scored.
