Baseball Team Sweeps DH from St. Joseph's of Brooklyn (5-4, 7-4)

The baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against St. Joseph’s College of Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon at MCU Park in Coney Island.

The Bearcats improved their season record to 9-12 with 5-4 and 7-4 victories in a doubleheader played at the New York Mets minor league stadium of the Brooklyn Cyclones.

In the first game, the Bearcats were on the scoreboard first in the third inning with
Justin Torres hitting an infield RBI single to score Jonathan Ovalles.

St. Joseph’s responded with two runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 advantage, but the Bearcats jumped ahead with two runs scored in the sixth inning for a 3-2 lead.

Thomas Daly smacked an RBI double to score John Yuksekol and Daly would come around to eventually score on a sacrifice fly RBI by Anthony Melendez.

St. Joseph’s scored twice in their next at-bat in the top of the seventh inning to lead 4-3, but the Bearcats tied the game in their bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Manuel Guerrero tied the game with a sacrifice fly RBI to score Richard Melendez.

The Bearcats scored the winning run in the ninth inning.
Marcos Mejia singled to centerfield, stole second base, and came around to score the winning run on an RBI single by Richard Melendez for the final 5-4 score.

Overall in the first game, Baruch (two errors) totaled five runs on eight hits, while St. Joseph’s (one error) totaled four runs on six hits.

In the second game, the Bearcats scored once in the fourth inning and exploded for six runs in the fifth for a commanding 7-0 lead.

The first run scored was on an RBI ground out by Daly to score Mejia from third base.

The team scored six runs on four hits in the sixth inning, beginning with Richard Melendez again involved in the action by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Pooti Ben Pradubsri.

Mejia and Daly each hit RBI singles with the bases loaded, followed by Richard Melendez scoring again on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead. Anthony Melendez completed the big sixth inning with a two RBI double down the left field line for a 7-0 score.

St. Joseph’s scored four runs in their bottom half of the fifth inning to cut the advantage to 7-4.

Jason Valentin entered the game in relief and pitched two innings with two strikeouts to record his first save of the regular season to close out the 7-4 final score. Sami Zantout started and gets his first collegiate victory with five innings pitched, four earned runs and two strikeouts.

Overall, Baruch (one error) totaled seven runs on eight hits, while St. Joseph’s (no errors) finished with four runs on only two hits.

The baseball team, who are the CUNYAC team this weekend with a bye, will return to action at MCU Park on Sunday morning with a 10:00 am non-conference single home game against Ramapo College.
