The Dolphins from the College of Staten Island scored the only run of the contest in the 10th inning to win the 2011 CUNYAC Baseball Championship at MCU Park on Coney Island.

The game featured an exciting pitcher’s duel that forced the championship to be decided in extra innings.

Baruch’s Jesus Izarra (9.2 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 6 BB) and CSI’s Kevin Anderson (10 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K) battled all evening and kept runners from scoring on a very windy and chilly night near the Coney Island Beach.

CSI almost ended the game in their final at-bat of the ninth inning with runners on second and third base, and only one out. However, Izarra was able to get the next two outs to send the championship to extra innings.

The Bearcats could only generate three hits all evening, but they did have a chance to score in their top half of the 10th inning.

Anthony Melendez smacked a two-out single to right field and stole second base to get the team into scoring position for only the second time all night, but the offense could not bring him home to score.

Staten Island did score in the bottom of the 10th inning to win their second consecutive championship. The Dolphins loaded the bases with only one out and James Lewis recorded his third hit of the game with a single to left field to score Pat Gale with the winning run for the 1-0 victory.

The Bearcats finish their season with a 16-19 record, while CSI improve to 22-16 and will now look to extend their season in the ECAC Metro Postseason Regional Tournament.
