Salem State Rallies to Defeat Bearcats (9-8)

The Baruch baseball team lost a 9-8 non-conference contest to Salem State University on Sunday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Bearcats began the game on a positive note by jumping out to a 4-0 lead.

They scored two runs in the second inning on an RBI single by
Thomas Daly, while Alvin Mata stole home.  They added a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Yancy Taveras to score Mata and scored a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Steve Hession to score Harold Fernandez.

Salem State battled back with a run scored in their top half of the fifth, but the Bearcats scored another run in the bottom of the fifth as
John Yuksekol hit an RBI single to score Daly.

They extended the lead to 6-1 in the seventh inning as Harold Fernandez smacked an RBI single to score John Yuksekol.

Salem State scored three runs in their top half of the eighth inning to cut the score to 6-4, but the Bearcats added two runs in their bottom half of the eighth for an 8-4 score.


Steve Hession hit another RBI single to score Ricky Gerbino and Thomas Daly hit a sacrifice fly to score Hession for the second run of the inning.

Unfortunately, despite the comfortable lead, Salem State scored five runs in the ninth inning and held the Bearcats scoreless in their final at-bat to register the come-from-behind 9-8 victory.

The baseball team will finish the Florida portion of their trip on Tuesday morning at 9:00 am with a single non-conference game against Skidmore in Fort Myers.
