Baseball Sweeps John Jay to Start CUNYAC Schedule on Winning Note

The baseball team began their CUNYAC schedule on a positive note by sweeping a home doubleheader from John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Saturday afternoon at Bronx Community College Baseball Field.

The Bearcats won with scores of 5-0 and 8-5 to improve to 9-8 overall and 2-0 in the CUNYAC, while John Jay drop to 4-17 overall and 2-2 in the CUNYAC.

In the first game,
Paul Perez, the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, pitched a shutout by allowing only three hits with five strikeouts on 69 pitches (13 balls). Perez is now a perfect 3-0 on the regular season.

The Bearcats scored five runs via five total hits. Alvin Mata batted 2-for-3 with three runs scored along with three stolen bases.
Steve Hession scored two runs with two stolen bases.

In the second game,
Jesus Izarra recorded the pitching victory by going five innings with one earned run allowed, four hits and five strikeouts to also improve his season record to a perfect 3-0.

Alvin Mata (3-4, 3 runs, 3 stolen bases) and Thomas Daly (3-4, 3 RBI) led the team at the plate, while Steve Hession (2-4, 2 runs) and Yancy Taveras (2-3, 2 stolen bases) finished two hits each.

The Bearcats led 3-2 after four innings, but blew the game wide open with five runs on five hits in the fifth inning en route to the victory.
Thomas Daly, the 2011 CUNYAC Player of the Year, had a big triple that scored two runs. The team finished with 10 stolen bases in the game.

The Bearcats will return to action on Tuesday, March 27, with a non-conference single game at Rutgers-Newark from the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Please note this game, which will be played at the Newark Bears minor league stadium in downtown Newark, New Jersey, is now scheduled to start at the revised time of 3:30 pm.
