BOX SCORE

The baseball team defeated the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 15-4, in game four of the 2012 CUNYAC/MCU Baseball Tournament Championship on Friday afternoon at MCU Park (Brooklyn Cyclones) in Brooklyn, New York.

With the result, the Bearcats post their 20th victory to establish a new team record for wins in a season. The previous record was 19 set in 2009.

They are also one win away from winning their third-ever CUNYAC Tournament Championship. They will resume action on Saturday at 4:00 pm to play the winner of this evening’s elimination game between John Jay and Staten Island.

"I told my players that we need to come out ready to compete because John Jay is always prepared to battle to the last out," said Head Coach Jose Torres. "I felt really comfortable sending Paul Perez out to the mound and he came through again along with solid hitting from Alvin Mata, Thommy DeJesus and Thomas Daly."

The bats were quiet in yesterday’s win against Lehman, but exploded today with 15 runs on 20 hits.

John Jay led 4-2 into the fifth inning, but the Bearcats scored six runs on six hits (two doubles) to take an 8-4 lead. They would score four more in the sixth inning on five hits to lead 12-4. That was enough to defeat John Jay for the third time this season.

The victory was a total team effort as nine different players had at least one hit.
Alvin Mata led the way batting 4-for-6, with two doubles, one triple, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

Thomas Daly and Thommy DeJesus each batted 3-for-5, with two runs scored. Daly also smacked a solo homer in the seventh inning.

Justin Torres (2-5, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Aldo Altamirano (2-3, 2 RBI, 1 run) and Ricky Gerbino (2-5, 3 RBI, 1 run) all contributed to the high-scoring rout. The Bearcats have scored at least six runs in 20 of the 37 games played this season.

Paul Perez improves his rookie record to 6-1 by pitching eight innings, allowing two earned runs and totaling six strikeouts. Alex Fabian
pitched in the ninth to wrap up the victory.

John Jay committed six errors and was unable to score any runs in the last four innings. For more information, please click the box score link at the top of this page.
