Women's Volleyball Knocks Off Stevens Tech in Five, Hayden Tallies 1,000th Career Kill

The women’s volleyball team had a day to remember on Saturday at the Stevens Tech Ducks Invitational in Hoboken, New Jersey.

For the first time ever, the Bearcats defeated Stevens Tech from the Empire 8 Conference. They started badly losing the first two sets with scores of 25-12 and 25-23, but bounced back dramatically by winning the next three sets with scores of 27-25, 25-23, 15-13 in one of the more exciting matches of the season.

The win is also the first this season in five sets after losing three other times.

Lauren Hayden and Jessica Wu led the comeback with 14 kills each. Hayden also hit for a solid .480 and totaled six blocks.

The victory was a true team effort with
Melinda Santiago (45 assists, 9 digs), Rebecca Peralta (10 kills, 10 digs), McKenzie Davidson (8 kills, 9 digs), and Michelle Stommes (5 kills, 5 block assists) all contributing to the win.

In the second match, the Bearcats defeated NYU-Poly
from the Skyline Conference for the second time this season. They lost the opening set 25-22, but won the next three 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 to improve their overall season record to 13-6.

The highlight of this match was Lauren Hayden recording her 1,000th career kill in the second set. She finished with 13 kills and currently has a career total of 1,008. 

Peralta had 15 kills and 20 digs, while Stommes had 10 kills. Santiago finished another busy match with 26 assists and 10 digs.

The Bearcats finished in second place at the Ducks Invitational. Wu was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The women’s volleyball team will return to action on Tuesday, October 2, with a 6:30 pm non-conference match at Montclair State from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). To follow the match via live stats, click here.
