Women's Tennis Wins Their First CUNYAC Championship Since 1997, Earn NCAA Berth

The women's tennis team won their first CUNYAC Championship since 1997 by defeating their rival the Hunter College Hawks, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the tennis courts of Queens College in Flushing, New York.

The Bearcats won all three doubles and followed with quick singles victories by
Daria Vasekina (#2, 6-1, 6-1) and Isabel Arias (#3, 6-2, 6-0) to wrap up the victory. Per postseason rules, the match was halted upon the first team to reach five points.

The championship is the team's fourth title in team history. Vasekina was named the Tournament MVP to wrap up an undefeated fall season individually that saw her go 12-0 in singles and 13-0 in doubles.

The team also made further history by earning CUNYAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. They will compete in the NCAA on May 12-15, 2016, and will discover their opponent/location on May 9.

They will also play in an estimated 3-5 matches in the spring to prepare for the NCAA and defend their undefeated season record of 13-0.

"I am very proud of the team," said Head Coach Florin Giuglescu, who also coached the women to their last title in 1997. "This team was together all season and each contributed equally to this championship. Hard work and team support helped made this championship possible."
