Baseball Sweeps Mount Saint Mary, Finish Opening Weekend With 2-2 Record

The baseball team recorded a 2-2 record in the opening weekend of their 2016 spring season.

The Bearcats lost both ends of a doubleheader to Old Westbury (7-1, 12-0) on Saturday at Baseball Heaven on Long Island, but bounced back in fine fashion Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of Mount Saint Mary (5-4, 11-6) at Dutchess Minor League Stadium in Wappingers Falls, New York.

The Bearcats knew they were starting the season against a very tough opponent in Old Westbury, which upset No. 5 ranked Kean University on Friday night.

In the opener, the Bearcats struggled with only one hit in a 7-1 loss.
Matthew Ballone had the only hit/RBI in the sixth inning with a double to centerfield to score Luca Altamirano, who had reached base on a walk.

The Bearcats suffered a 12-0 shutout loss in the second game and were limited to six hits.
Jasdeep Buttar was the top hitter in the lineup batting 2-for-3, with a pair of singles.

The team quickly regrouped on a comfortable and warm Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep against the Blue Knights from Mount Saint Mary College, which featured an impressive comeback.

In the 12 p.m. contest, they scored the first five runs to lead 5-0 going into the bottom half of the fifth inning. The Blue Knights rallied with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, but it was not enough as
Ryan Smith recorded the save for the 5-4 win.

Ballone led the lineup again batting 2-for-3, with a two run double in the fifth inning. Buttar also had an RBI single in that inning that would later stand as the winning hit.
Ryan Warner earned his first career win.

In the second game, the Bearcats trailed 6-2 after five innings, but the bats came alive in the sixth with four runs to tie the contest and five more in the seventh to overtake the Blue Knights for the road victory.

Donovan Hunt started the rally with a two run double in the sixth and John Paul Cattaro finished it off in the seventh with a two run single.

Bogdan Leyton earned the win in relief and Smith pitched a quiet 1-2-3 inning in the seventh. Dan Daley had a solid game batting 2-for-4, with two RBI.

The baseball team will next head South for their yearly Florida trip to play top schools, as well as take advantage of the fine weather to get more practice time.

The team will play their first contest in Fort Myers, Florida on Wednesday, March 2, with a single, nine inning contest at 12 p.m. against North Central University from Minnesota.
