Women's Volleyball Splits in First Day of DeSales Invitational

The women's volleyball team began their fall schedule on Friday afternoon at the DeSales Invitational in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.

The Bearcats won their opener against Rutgers-Camden in a five-set marathon that went the distance. They lost the nightcap in three to Washington College of Maryland.

The team started strong against Rutgers-Camden by hitting a solid .444 in the first set to win 25-14. They kept up their play winning 25-20 in the second set, but the opponent rallied to win 25-14 and 25-15 to force a fifth set tie-breaker.

Rutgers-Camden appeared to have the set in control and took a 14-11 lead with match point on the line, but the Bearcats stunned them by tallying the last five points to walk off with the dramatic 16-14 win.

Seniors
Akilah Meulens (15 kills, 3 blocks) and Alessandra Chavez (career-high 14 kills) led the attack. Rookie Stephanie Cornwell dished out 33 assists and Marisa Bou collected 14 digs.

In the second match against Washington the Bearcats suffered a sweep with scores of 26-24, 25-9, 25-23.  Meulens led again with 11 kills and Cornwell had 20 assists.

The Bearcats will quickly return to action Saturday in the second day of the invitational with matches against Gwynedd Mercy (12 p.m.) and the host DeSales (2 p.m.).
