Women's Volleyball Sweeps CSI, Advance to Friday's Championship Rounds at Home

The women's volleyball team swept (15,22,19) the Dolphins from the College of Staten Island to advance to the CUNYAC Championship Rounds on Friday night at home in the friendly confines of the ARC Arena.

Second-seeded Brooklyn College will play third-seeded John Jay College at 4:00 p.m. The fourth-seeded Bearcats will play top-seeded Hunter at 6:00 p.m. The semifinal winners will then play in the 8:00 p.m. championship match for the CUNYAC title and coveted berth to the NCAA Tournament.

The Bearcats controlled tonight's match and started the first set hitting .357 to set the tone early in a 25-15 win.

They cruised out to a big lead in the second set and led 24-14, but the visiting Dolphins went on a furious rally with eight straight points to get as close as 24-22. Anita Sengara, who tallied 20 kills tonight, smacked a clinching kill to finish the second set at 25-22.

The Bearcats won the third set 25-19 to quickly complete the sweep and advance to the semifinal round for the 15th straight year.

"It was a well earned win and everybody came out strong today," said Head Coach Kevin Edwards. "Now, we have to prepare our game plan and focus on the big semifinal on Friday against Hunter."

Sengara finished hitting a torrid .341. Katherine Chen had an all-around match with 28 assists, four aces and three blocks. Ada Cao added four kills and nine digs.

Jay-La Guy was tops for Staten Island with eight kills and Arianna Spears had 20 assists.
