Bearcats Rally Falls Short in 7-5 Loss to USMMA

The Bearcats lost a close one, 7-5, to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the home opener on Tuesday at MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York.

The visiting Mariners got on the scoreboard first in the top second with a run on a fielder's choice, but the Bearcats went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of that inning on a Matthew Tirado run-scoring single up the middle and a Michael McGroarty two run single to left field.

The Mariners from the Skyline Conference scored the next four runs to jump ahead, 5-3.

The Bearcats would get one back in the bottom of the seventh with McGoarty scoring on a wild pitch.

Unfortunately, the Mariners helped themselves with a pair of insurance runs in the top ninth, forcing the Bearcats to rally in their final at-bat.

The rally started with an RBI single by Donovan Hunt to plate McGroarty for his second run scored in the game, but the team could not push across any more runs to suffer the final score, 7-5.

Hunt finished with two hits, while McGroarty had two runs scored and three walks.

Four different visiting Mariners had two hits apiece, while Jacob Sithong and Jesse Rienhold each had two RBIs to raise their team's record to 11-2.
