Game Recap: Baseball |

Bearcats Sweep CUNYAC DH from Staten Island (2-0, 6-5)

The baseball team swept The College of Staten Island in a doubleheader today at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, NY. The Bearcats shut out CSI in the first game, winning 2-0, before defeating the Dolphins 6-5 in a tightly contested second game.

In the first game, Paul Sirakowski was dominant on the mound with a complete game shutout with four strikeouts.

Both teams only had two hits each in the pitching duel, but the Bearcats made them count the most. JP Ramirez smacked an RBI triple in the second inning to plate Conor McCabe for the first run.

Michael McGroarty had a sacrifice fly RBI in the third inning to bring home Davic Capellan for the eventual 2-0 final. Capellan had reached base on a single.

John Esposito (7IP, 6H, 2R, 2 ER, 4K, 3BB) suffered the complete game loss for the visitors.

In the second game, the Bearcats had to rally back twice from deficits to pull out a 6-5 win.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Bearcats bats came alive with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Dolphins again took the lead at 5-4 in the top sixth, but the Bearcats scored two runs in the bottom sixth to take the lead for good at 6-5.

Kemal Deljanin had the winning hit with a two-run single in the sixth inning to plate Liam O'Gara and Ramirez.

Theodore Avgerinos pitched six innings and earned the win, bringing his record to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Angel Acevedo pitched a scoreless seventh inning on 10 pitches to earn his second save of the season.

Andrew Nathan had a two-run homer for Staten Island in the sixth inning.

The Bearcats now sit atop CUNYAC with a 4-1 conference record.

The team will travel to take on SUNY Old Westbury on Tuesday, April 9 at 3:30 PM, before returning to conference play Thursday against CSI to finish the 3-game series.
