The softball team finished its season today by sweeping the York College Cardinals (9-4, 11-4) in a doubleheader played at Padavan-Preller Field in Bellerose, New York.
The visiting Bearcats went up 2-0 in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Danielle Petrunti and an RBI single by Darine Mata.
The Bearcats then used a four-run third inning to pull away from the Cardinals. Petrunti drove in two more runs with a single to left field, bringing home Gabrielle Huezo and Karina Gotz. Petrunti eventually crossed home plate herself thanks to heads-up base running. Daniela Lopez capped the inning off by driving in Jooyoung Park.
Lopez drove in Park again in the seventh inning when she smacked a triple to right field.
The Bearcats scored one run in each of the final three innings to secure the win.
Victoria Kisling pitched the complete game and struck out a career-high 15 batters. The sophomore also hit an RBI single in the sixth inning.
The second game was much like the first.
The Bearcats went up 4-0 in the second inning and never looked back. Milly Ye picked up an RBI when she drew a walk with the bases loaded. Huezo followed with an RBI groundout. Kisling then helped her own cause by hitting a two-RBI single.
Kisling was as good at the plate as she was on the mound. She went 4-for-4 and drew a walk, along with pitching her second complete game of the day.
York made the Bearcats sweat in the fourth inning by scoring four runs, making the score 8-4. That's as close as the Cardinals would get, as the Bearcats tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings en route to the 11-4 win.
During the doubleheader York's Nicole Ovelheira became the program's all-time leader in hits and tied the all-time RBI mark.
Bearcats' sophomore pitcher Victoria Kisling finishes the season with a career total of 201 strikeouts.
