Softball Drops DH to NJCU, Fall in Extra Innings in Game 1

The softball team lost a competitive DH to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Saturday at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The Gothic Knights started the first game with two runs on two hits and one error for the quick 2-0 lead, but the visiting Bearcats battled back with two runs in the third, and one each in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 4-2.

Carly Quint, who was among the NCAA leaders last season in RBI with 63 in 39 games, picked up where she left off with an RBI single in the third to plate Jordyn Schwartz. Julia Cuttone also scored advancing on the throw.

Cuttone added an RBI single in the fourth to score Bridget Campanelli and Milagros Arias smacked an RBI single in the fifth that scored Danielle Petrunti for the 4-2 advantage.

Unfortunately, the Gothic Knights rallied to tie the game in their final at-bat and won on a walk-off in the eighth inning, 5-4.

The Bearcats battled in the second game, but suffered a tough 3-1 loss.

They tied (1-1) the game in the fourth inning as Cuttone scored again, this time on a fielding error by the outfield.

The Gothic Knights kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard over the final three innings and scored twice, including the go-ahead run in their bottom fourth, for the victory.

Caroline Gallagher pitched six solid innings with two earned runs allowed in the tough loss.

The Bearcats will now head south to the Baltimore region for a doubleheader tomorrow against Notre Dame of Maryland starting at 1:00 p.m.
