Bearcats Improve to 8-2 in CUNYAC, Sweep John Jay in Season Series

The baseball team won both ends of a CUNYAC doubleheader sweeping John Jay College on Friday afternoon at Bronx Community College.

The Bearcats won 5-3 and 9-3 to continue to lead CUNYAC in first place with an 8-2 record with two regular season games left on the schedule (Lehman next Friday). The playoffs start on Tuesday, May 9.

The two teams were initially scheduled to play Saturday, but due to the entire weekend forecast for rain, it was pushed up 24 hours to Friday in advance of the weather.

The Bearcats in the opener jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 5 innings, but the visiting Bloodhounds scored three runs to get as close as 4-3 in the sixth inning. The Bearcats added an insurance run in their bottom sixth and held on for the victory.

Sophomore Nathaniel Demchak earned his fourth win of the season going 6 innings with 3 hits, 3 earned runs, and 10 strikeouts, which included 7 strikeouts in his first three innings on the mound. Rookie Joseph Bello earned his second save pitching the final inning with 2 strikeouts.

Both Bello and Pedro Tejada, Jr. batted 2-for-3 as part of a 9-hit total attack on a very overcast afternoon in the Bronx. Roy Longarzo had a triple, while Andrew Horyczun and Tejada, Jr. each had a double.

Kenneth Taveras scored an exciting inside-the-park-homer to lead off the fifth inning.

The second game started as a pitcher's duel with no scoring after 4 innings and each team with only 1 hit. In the fifth inning, the bats came alive for the Bearcats with 5 runs on 2 hits.

Joseph Cocozza smacked a two-run triple and Tejada, Jr had an RBI single to jump ahead 5-0. John Jay kept it interesting by scoring 3 runs on three hits in their next at-bat for a 5-3 scoreline heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The Bearcats kept their momentum and scored 4 more runs highlighted by a two-run single by Longarzo and another RBI single by Tejada, Jr. en route to the victory.

Rookie Jeremy Ramirez (4H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 6K) earned his third win, while Brian Baek pitched a quiet seventh inning with a strikeout to help finish out the result.
