WVB Loses CUNYAC Semi-Final in 5-Set Nail-Biter

The women's volleyball team hosted the CUNYAC semi-final match against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs in the ARC Arena on Thursday evening. The Bearcats were defeated in a close battle of five sets 25-15, 22-25, 21-25, 25-19, 12-15.

The squad got off to a quick 4-0 start to open the match and went up later by as much as nine points (18-9). They maintained that lead and secured the first set win on a service ace by Jennifer Dong.

The Bearcats got off to a 10-3 start in the second set. However, Brooklyn came back to tie the score at 15. The score remained tied until Brooklyn went on a 5-2 scoring run to win the set (22-25) and tie the match at 1-1. 

In the third set, Brooklyn had the advantage as they got 10 kills to the Bearcats' seven to win 25-21 and take a two-set lead.

The fourth set resulted in the squad being down early (9-5) and coming back to take an 11-10 lead on a kill by Dibjot Kaur. They continued their dominance in the set by going on an 11-3 run, including three consecutive kills, to make it 22-14 and went on to win 25-19 to force the winner take all tie-breaker.

The two teams traded points to start the tiebreaker set. The score was tied at 10 at one point, but a 5-2 run by Brooklyn won the match. 

Dibjot Kaur had 19 kills and Karolina Lundqvist recorded a career-high 17 kills. Pei Qiong Ren tallied 20 digs.

Karen Pozo Castro recorded 41 assists, 16 digs, and a career-high eight service aces.

The Bearcats finish the season with an 11-15 overall record and second place in the CUNYAC regular season standings.
