Baseball Splits DH Against SUNY Canton in Season Opener

The baseball team started their season on a sunny Saturday with a doubleheader split against SUNY Canton at Lasorda Legacy Park on Long Island.

The Bearcats controlled the action in the first game winning 9-1 behind a complete game pitching effort from John Kim (7 IP, 1 R, 1 ER) and a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate by Benjamin Luciano.

The visiting Bearcats were on the scoreboard early with two runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Joseph Bello that scored Roy Longarzo and Joseph Cocozza.

They broke it open with seven runs in the fifth inning that started with a Luciano RBI single and ended with a bases-clearing three-run double by Christopher Petrillo to defeat the Roos who made the six-hour trip from upstate New York to host the two games.

Kim earned his debut win with six strikeouts and only one walk.

The Bearcats started the second game strong leading 4-0 after five innings. Cocozza smacked an RBI single in the first inning and added an RBI double in the third. Bello added a fielder's choice RBI in the fifth inning.

The Roos rallied in their final at-bat scoring four runs on six hits to send the contest to extra innings where they scored on a walk-off RBI single to win 5-4 in the ninth inning.

Zachary Niedzwiecki (two runs) and Cocozza (three RBI) finished with two hits each in the second game.
