Softball Sweeps Sarah Lawrence in Season-Opening Doubleheader, Leilani Jimenez Pitches No-Hitter

The softball team played its season opener, a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against Sarah Lawrence College at Flowers Park in New Rochelle, New York.

The Bearcats emerged victorious, winning 8-0 in the first game and 10-0 in the second game, both under the five-inning mercy rule.

Rookie Jules Wychunas hit a double and then stole third base and later scored on a wild pitch, giving the squad their first run of the season in the bottom of the first inning.

The Bearcats blew up the game in the fourth inning with four runs on six hits and one error to jump ahead 5-0, highlighted on an RBI double by senior Julia Cuttone and an RBI single by rookie Reina Johnson.

They ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run single by Wychunas to end the game early at 8-0.

Johnson pitched a shutout with five innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts and only one walk.

In the second game, the Bearcats recorded another shutout behind sophomore Leilani Jimenez's five inning no-hitter for the 10-0 win. Jimenez allowed only one base runner via a walk for the mercy rule win.

Jimenez also had a homer at the plate in the first inning, and Melanie Robles hit her first homer in the fourth inning to finish with a career-high five RBI.

The team will travel to South Carolina on Sunday to compete this week at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach starting on Tuesday with games against The University of Valley Forge and Rosemont University.
