Baseball Starts CUNYAC Schedule with DH Split at CCNY, Score 23 Runs in Game 1 Win

The baseball team began the CUNYAC portion of their schedule with a doubleheader split against the Beavers of CCNY on Saturday afternoon at Ohio Field on the campus of Bronx Community College.

The Bearcats broke open the first game with 16 runs in the seventh inning to blow out the Beavers 23-3.

The top four batters in the lineup combined for 13 hits, and the team also smacked three homers to start their CUNYAC schedule with an impressive victory.

Roy Longarzo (4-5, 3 runs, 4 RBI, triple, double), Peter Marino (2-5, 3 runs, 3 RBI), Joseph Cocozza (4-5, 4 runs, 4 RBI, double), and Benjamin Luciano (3-6, 2 runs, 4 RBI, double, homer) were the top four batters.

Rookie Matthew Rappa and Joseph Bello also homered with Luciano in the 19-hit attack. Marino added two stolen bases, while Andrew DeRose (two hits), Nicholas Benedetto (3 runs), and Kenneth Pastrana (3 runs) also contributed to the win.

John Kim is now a perfect 3-0 on the mound, pitching six innings, allowing only five hits, three earned runs, and four strikeouts for the victory on a warm afternoon. Luis Sanchez retired all three batters in the seventh inning to seal the win.

The second game of the doubleheader featured an extra-inning affair of 11 innings as the Beavers won on a walk-off to salvage a home split.

The visiting Bearcats started losing 4-0 after the first inning but came back to tie with three runs in the second inning and one in the third inning.

Rappa and Andrew DeRose scored on errors, and Nicholas Benedetto had a sacrifice fly RBI for the three second-inning runs. Luciano had a sacrifice RBI to score Marino, making it 4-4 in the third.

The Bearcats scored three more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Rappa and a RBI single by Joseph Bello.

The two teams were tied 8-8 after six innings and neither team would score for the next four innings until the Beavers won it on an RBI walk.

Longarzo added three stolen bases in the second game.

In other CUNYAC action today, John Jay defeated Lehman twice.
