Women's Volleyball Lose Tough Four-Set Home Match to St. Joseph’s University (LI)

The Baruch College Bearcats took on the St. Joseph's University of Long Island Golden Eagles in a non-conference match up on Thursday night in the ARC Arena.
 
The Bearcats' evening got started with a kill by Alicia Graves, assisted by Karen Pozo Castro. It was a back-and-forth battle between the two squads but Bearcats lost in a close first set, 25-23.
 
In set number two, the Bearcats started off on a 2-0 run that was ignited by Dibjot Kaur and Alicia Graves. The squad went on a 5-1 scoring run followed by a rally from the Golden Eagles to later tie the match at 13. The Bearcats could not hold on despite their offensive efforts and lost 25-22.
 
The squad started set three on a positive note, opening with three consecutive points, including a service ace by Castro and a kill by Jennifer Dong. The two teams were tied at 23 when the Bearcats responded with two kills from Graves and Karolina Lundqvist, to win the set 25-23 for a 2-1 set score.
 
The visiting Golden Eagles won the fourth set to clinch the match. They broke a 14-14 tie with six straight points to win 25-19.
 
The Bearcats totaled 41 kills compared to 45 by the Golden Eagles.
 
The match was very competitive with 23 score ties and 11 lead changes.
 
The Bearcats were close early with 24-23 in the first set and and 23-22 in the second set but the Golden Eagles each time pulled out of the win.
 
Kaur led the Bearcats with 13 kills and Graves had a career-high 12 kills. The team also received a solid effort defensively with double-figure kills by Pei Qiong Ren (15), Dong (14), and Castro (12).
 
Castro also dished out 34 assists for her second straight match with at least 30 or more assists.

The team will return to action next Tuesday, September 16, with their first CUNYAC match at CCNY with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
