The baseball team dropped a tough doubleheader (6-2, 2-1) to the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College on Sunday morning in Fort Myers.
Skidmore jumped out to the lead in the first game, scoring on an error and a wild pitch in their opening at-bat to take a 2–0 advantage. The Bearcats responded in the third inning after loading the bases. Frank Scerra was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, and Zachary Niedzwiecki followed with a walk that forced in another run, tying the game at 2–2.
The Thoroughbreds regained control by scoring two runs in both the third and fourth innings to build a 6–2 lead. The Bearcats continued to battle and put runners on base, but Skidmore held on for the neutral-site victory.
The second game turned into a pitching duel. Benjamin Norwood struck out seven and allowed just one earned run to keep the Bearcats in contention. Skidmore scored twice in the third inning on a pair of RBI hits, forcing the Bearcats to play from behind once again.
Longarzo scored again in the sixth inning on a fielding error to cut the deficit to 2–1. The Bearcats had a runner in scoring position in their final at-bat, but Skidmore held on for the narrow 2–1 victory.
Longarzo finished the doubleheader with two doubles and Niedzwieck had two RBI.
Defense came up big today with a number of stops, including Kenneth Pastrana and Peter Marino catches in the outfield. Captain and catcher Joe Bello picked off a runner at second base to end the top of the seventh inning.
The Bearcats will play again under the pleasant Florida weather with a doubleheader on Wednesday against Geneva College of Pennsylvania.
